Comprehensive Physiotherapy Treatment for Back Pain
At Active Physiotherapy, we perform a full assessment of your movement patterns to understand what is driving the back pain. From there, we will perform tailored evidence-based treatments to get you moving better and feeling better as soon as possible.
We have a highly experienced team of therapists here to help you. Because we have so much experience in our physio clinical staff, we commonly see people who have failed treatments elsewhere and we can get them great outcomes.
Understanding Back Pain: Causes and Symptoms
Back pain can be divided into upper back pain and lower back pain. Very often these are linked. Back pain is extremely common, affecting 80% of people globally at one point in their lives.
When back pain occurs, it is important to see a physiotherapist to examine why this occurred and to try to treat the root cause of the pain. Back pain can be very debilitating and can limit basic functions like sitting down and standing up, walking and bending over.
Common causes of back pain include:
- Disc injuries and spinal nerve irritations
- The sacro-iliac joint is a commonly aggravated joint and causes very low pain in the back either on the right or the left.
- Facet joint arthropathy (or arthritis) is also another common cause of back pain.
Typical symptoms of back pain include:
- Stiffness (being unable to bend forward or backwards)
- Pain is also a very common reason why patients present to us for treatment.
- Another reason patients present to us is when they are unable to perform as they would like because they have back pain for eg doing deadlifts at the gym or running.
We can help with all these issues.

Why Choose Our Back Pain Physio Services?
At Active Physiotherapy, we take a very detailed look at how you have got to the point of having back pain. We will listen to your story and piece together important aspects of your history that lead you to having pain.
We will perform a comprehensive assessment of you moving to see where you are moving well, and where you are moving in a non-optimal manner. Once we have determined what is likely going on, we will discuss with you so we can work together to get you feeling better
Our treatments are highly skilled and evidence-based. We have a strength and mobility gym and run classes for patients who need to get stronger through their back and core.
We are one of the few physio clinics around who have diagnostic ultrasound imaging equipment which allows us to visualise your important core muscles either working well, or not so well. We are able to re-train these muscles so that they are stabilising you during the activities you love.
Our Approach to Physiotherapy for Back Pain
At Active Physiotherapy Newtown & Darlinghurst we find that a detailed approach to investigating WHY your lower back is sore makes all the difference.
In fact, we think much of the treatment of low back pain by other practitioners is generic and not very useful. We will look closely at how you stand and move to determine where your body is moving well, and where it is not.
We have very sensitive assessment techniques and this invariably directs us to where the “driver” of your problem really is. Sometimes it is not where the pain is!
Once we know where the driver is, we ensure this region is moving well and we find this starts the journey back to being pain free for most patients.
As part of your rehabilitation, we will teach you exercises aimed at enhancing your functional stability.
Once you are feeling more stable, we will aim to strengthen you with more loaded exercises.
Physiotherapy Treatment for Back Pain: What to Expect
In our initial session, we will first listen to your story. This might be a simple story or might be quite complicated. We need to hear everything that you consider is important to how you have ended up with us.
We are always interested in any previous injuries you have had and any surgery you have had. This is one of the reasons we were the first practice in Sydney to institute 60 mins initial appointments, over 20 years ago!
Once we have gone through our bespoke and detailed assessment of you moving, we will pinpoint where we think the non-optimal movement is and try to see if this fits your clinical history and picture. Invariably it fits neatly.
We will always explain our findings to you in a way that you understand. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions that you have.
Our treatments are very hands-on and if there are tight sore muscles, we will look to use therapeutic touch to release this discomfort. We will also guide you on how to move better, sit better, run or walk more efficiently and even lift heavy weights more efficiently.
