“How many sessions is this going to take?”
It’s a really common question we hear at Active Physiotherapy. Whether you’re dealing with a nagging headache, a literal pain in the neck, or a hip that “niggles” every time you squat, you want a deadline for feeling better.
The short answer? You should feel a difference in 1 to 3 sessions, but “being better” usually takes between 6 and 16 weeks.
Here is a breakdown of why that timeline exists and how we navigate the road to recovery at our Newtown and Darlinghurst clinics.
Phase 1: Weeks 1 -2 (1-3 treatments in)
In the first fortnight, our goal is a “quick win.” At Active Physiotherapy, we utilize specialized manual therapy techniques that go beyond general massage. We consider this our “clinical IP”—it’s designed to settle the nervous system and provide immediate relief.
What a “Win” looks like here:
- A noticeable drop in pain intensity and frequency.
- Improved range of motion (e.g., being able to check your blind spot while driving without neck pain).
- Feeling confident that you’re finally on the right track.
The Diagnostic Difference: Why You Might Have Failed Elsewhere
Many patients come to us after months of seeing other practitioners with little progress. Usually, the culprit is an incorrect initial diagnosis.
If you have low back pain and a therapist spends weeks just “releasing” your tight hamstrings, the relief will be temporary. Why? Because the brain is often making those muscles tight to protect an underlying issue, like a loss of pelvic stability or hip stability.
Once we identify and correct the source, the brain stops the protective “clench,” and the tension vanishes. We treat the driver, not just the symptom.
Phase 2: The “Software Update” (Weeks 6–16)
Once the pain is down, the real work begins. We transition from “passive” treatment (us doing the work) to “active” loading (you doing the work).
Think of your body like a computer: manual therapy fixes the hardware, but we still need to update the software (your brain and nervous system). We look for:
- Optimal Joint Loading: Ensuring your joints are positioned correctly during movement.
- Functional Tolerance: In our examples above, can your hip or spine handle the weight of a gym session or a long day at the office?
The Timeline Variables:
- The 6-Week Path: Typically for those who are already fit, have good muscle mass, and have the time to commit to their rehab.
- The 12-16 Week Path: For those managing high stress, busy work schedules, or those who are starting from a lower baseline of strength.
Sometimes, recovery be a bit of a “Rocky Road”
Recovery is rarely a straight line. Life happens—sick kids, a stressful week at work, or an accidental flare-up during a workout can feel like a setback.
We educate our patients to expect these “bumps.” A flare-up doesn’t reset the clock to zero; it’s simply a sign that we need to adjust the load and calm the system down before pushing forward again.
The Goal: Graduation
We don’t believe in “forever patients.” Our goal for everyone at Active Physiotherapy is graduation.
You’ll know you’re ready when you’ve returned to the activities you love, you understand your body’s specific “triggers,” and you have the tools to manage your own weaknesses. We don’t aim for a “maintenance schedule”—we aim for a version of you that is strong, capable, and pain-free.
