Dr. John Panagopoulos

PhD, B. App. Sci (Phty), B.Med Sci. (Anat). Level 3 Sports Physio, APAM

Having graduated from the University of Sydney, John has been a practising physiotherapist for over 24 years, working in Australia and abroad. He also has a Bachelor of Medical Science, majoring in Anatomy. These complementary degrees serve to strengthen his knowledge of normal and pathological anatomy and physiology.

John has a post-graduate Certificate in Acupuncture, and uses this as an adjunct to manual therapy to achieve deeper pain relief and muscle relaxation. He has also trained in Advanced Manual Therapy of the lumbar spine, pelvis, thoracic spine and ribs. He is accredited in “Clinical Pilates”, utilising Pilates principles in injury and sports rehabilitation. John is also an experienced TMJ (jaw) physiotherapist.

John has completed a PhD in Physiotherapy in conjunction with Macquarie University. His thesis, titled “Innovative Approaches to the Diagnosis and Treatment of Back Pain” investigated causes of low back pain which had previously not been discussed in the medical literature. He is hoping this research will help improve the way medical professionals assess and treat Low Back Pain.

John has published numerous research articles in prestigious medical journals. He is an invited reviewer for the journals “Spine”  and “Rheumatology International” and regularly reviews new research prior to publication. John has presented his research internationally and in Australia to critical acclaim.

John has worked with many and varied sporting organisations during his career. He has been the head physiotherapist for the Neganehira Nagas cricket team in the Sri Lankan Premier League. In this role, John has been fortunate to work with some of the world’s leading cricketers in a high pressure environment. John has also been the physiotherapist for the Bengal Tigers in the Indian Cricket League (ICL), a professional 20-20 cricket league based in India.

For many years, John has been the physiotherapist for the Sydney Cricket Club in the Sydney Grade Cricket Competition. John has also worked with 1st Grade Rugby and Australian Rules clubs. He has worked privately with Wallabies, Super Rugby players and Commonwealth Games athletes.

John is a Level 1 Titleist Golf Fitness Professional and works closely with leading golf professionals in order to maximise health and performance of professional and amateur golfers.

John is accredited to use Real-Time Ultrasound to assess and treat the core and deep hip stabilising muscles. This technology is allowing specialised physiotherapists a window into these important muscle groups and how to identify dysfunction and devise rehabilitation plans.

John is a keen golfer and is working to get his handicap into single figures. John loves a long run and has completed numerous half marathons, including a high altitude half marathon around the Snowy Mountains. In his spare time, you will find him chasing his two beautiful kids around various parks in Sydney.
