ONERO™ Osteoporosis Classes
At our Newtown Clinic, we offer ONERO™ Bone Strengthening Classes, expertly designed by Griffith University. These classes provide safe and effective bone-loading exercises tailored to support your bone health.
Research shows that gradual bone loading not only slows bone loss in individuals with low bone density but can also increase bone density.
Our ONERO™ Bone Strengthening Classes are led by a licensed physiotherapist, ensuring all exercises are performed safely and effectively. For many of our patients with osteoporosis or osteopaenia, lifting weights is a new experience. That’s why a significant focus of our program is teaching proper lifting techniques. This ensures the load is distributed correctly through the body, helping to strengthen bones in a safe and targeted way.

Frequently Asked Questions
Below is a list of frequently asked questions to help you be a part of our ONERO™ program at Active Physiotherapy Newtown:
If you have been diagnosed with osteoporosis, osteopaenia, or are concerned about having low bone mass
Each class has certain important weight-lifting movements. There are also core exercises and balance exercises incorporated into the program.
We currently offer classes on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at our Active Physiotherapy Newtown clinic. We expect to continue to add classes in the future.
$38 per class. The classes are run as terms throughout the year. Please see our terms and conditions page for more information.
We recommend that you wear exercise gear in which you feel comfortable moving, and bring a water bottle for staying hydrated throughout the class.
The ONERO™ programme recommends attending two to three classes a week, however it will still be beneficial if you can only attend once a week.
Yes, you need to bring your DEXA/bone mineral density scans and book a 1 hour appointment with our physiotherapists Toby Wilcox or Will Cole. During that session, you will go through the scans, perform baseline functional testing, and be taught how to safely lift the weights under supervision.
You can make an appointment with Toby or Will by going to the Active Physiotherapy website or by calling us on 9519 4319. If booking online, please choose the ONERO Assessment option.
No, unfortunately the ONERO™ classes cannot be covered by a GPMP or with an EPC plan (although these may be used for your initial 1 hour appointment with the physiotherapist). However, if you have private health cover, you may be eligible to claim money back at the end of the block of 10 classes, depending on your private health cover coverage
We have 1 make up class every term to help clients if they have to miss a class. Also we run plenty of classes throughout each week and term so you might be able to make up more classes by jumping into another class (as long as it is not full). Please see out terms and conditions below for more info.
Yes, it is safe. In your one-on-one 1 hour session with our physiotherapist, they will ensure you feel safe and comfortable with each of the exercises. You will generally start with just your bodyweight and focus on technique before transitioning to lifting light weights over the first few months. You can challenge yourself as much as you want each class, and the physiotherapist supervising will guide you based on your symptoms.
Yes. Each class will have exercises that focus on your ability to balance in a safe environment with our physiotherapist supervising you
This is a very common and valid concern, but each of our classes are performed under supervision from a trained professional who will advise you on the ideal weights to lift, and help correct your technique when required. Over time, your ability to lift heavier weights will improve, which will result in increased muscle mass and bone mineral density.
Terms and conditions for booking and cancellations
To help everyone get the most out of our classes, we kindly ask you to take note of our booking and cancellation guidelines:
Securing your spot: to guarantee your place in the class, payment for the 11-week term is required at the beginning of each term. This ensures your spot is reserved for the entire term.
Missed a class? If you’re unable to attend a class due to illness or being away, you are welcome to attend one make up class held in week 12 of the term.
Making up classes: If you know you’ll be away at another time during the term, please call the clinic. We’ll do our best to help you find a spot in another class during the same term (before or after your time away). With over 12 Onero classes per week (and growing), this offers some flexibility.
Switching classes: If you can’t make your usual classes, feel free to call our reception to check if there’s any space in another class that week. If all classes are full, we appreciate your understanding that switch may not be possible for that week.
